LYDIA HWITSUM
Green Party Candidate for
Cowichan—Malahat—Langford

Lydia Hwitsum is a citizen of the Cowichan Nation located in Duncan on Vancouver Island where she previously served four two-year terms as the elected Chief of the Cowichan Tribes.

 

She has advocated for indigenous and human rights locally, nationally and internationally.  She has presented at the United Nations Permanent Forum on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and at the Organization of American States Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Lydia Hwitsum, Xtli'li'ye, and her family have always lived in Cowichan territory. Her leadership and approach draw on both her training as a lawyer and her Cowichan teachings. She has a proven record of bringing diverse people and interests together to create new and effective solutions to big problems.

When we elect Lydia Hwitsum as our Member of Parliament, she will work for:

  • Better health care, including mental health and addictions strategies

  • Affordable and accessible housing

  • Indigenous self-determination

  • Protection of our oceans and fisheries

  • A climate strategy that meets critical targets
